The Book of Daniel in the Bible has been debated for centuries regarding its veracity and age. The oldest reference to the book of Daniel is quoted by the author of a section of the Sibylline Oracles commonly dated to the middle of the 2nd century BCE, and was popular at Qumran beginning at much the same time, suggesting that it was known and revered from the middle of that century.
With this being the earliest proof of the text’s existence, many experts believe that the descriptions of future events in the Book of Daniel are too accurate to history and therefore must have been written after the events.
Not all share this belief. Many also believe the texts to be real and containing valuable future warnings within its pages. The text itself tells us that its true meaning has been hidden by its writer as commanded by the angel until the future.
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.’
Daniel 12:4 KJV
From time immemorial, scholars and lay persons alike have been attempting to unravel what has been hidden in the book, to limited success.
And so the dispute has raged on as to whether the book of Daniel and its prophecies are real, or written after the events.
This might be about to change, with the findings of the Chronicle Project Research Group of Canada. The Chronicle Project has restored what they say are the original meanings of Daniel 9:24 – 27 using a system embedded in the ancient Hebrew language at it inception, that the group discovered in 2009.
This system is known as Self Defining Hebrew and uses a glyph/concept system much like the ancient hieroglyphs of Egypt, rather than the phonetic system that is presently used.
Here is a link to their research notes: http://thechronicleproject.org/PDF1/researchnotesmaster.pdf
The system allows for a multiple level check on the meaning of each word, thus allowing restorations of words that only appear once in Daniel and no where else in the bible. The present system of translation lacks this capacity, thus lending to the disputes among scholars of ancient Hebrew.
When this new system was applied to the verses in Daniel, the results were astounding.
Daniel 12:4 now explains a very important point using SDH
And with the scroll Daniel, hide the decrees and seal those until the passage of time is reached, civilization multiplies and the lasting knowledge proceeds to increase.
The angel only told Daniel to only hide the decrees of the future predictions. Only these items need to be unraveled. These exact verses are the ones that the ChronicleProject.org have deciphered todate.
The material (Daniel 9:24-27) when restored, contained the prediction of the first great Jewish – Roman war, beginning with the revolt of the Jews and ending with the fall of Jerusalem, its people and the temple at the hands of the Roman army. It predicts the year 70 CE, the seven months of warfare and the seventy thousand man Roman army.
The restored verses go on to predict the second revolt of the Jews, sixty two years later in 132 CE, known as the Bar Kokhba revolt.
They foretell of the complete destruction of the city, people and temple mount for ages to come, plus the deportation of the remaining Jewish people.
Here is the SDH Restored verses of Daniel 9:24 in modern English (bracketed information added for historical and verbal context)
v24 Seventy! Seventy (C.E.) therefore to break up your (nation), shall come upon your people and to come upon your revered city (Jerusalem). For all shall begin to revolt. And toward the (people) shall arise continuous atrocities.
And it shall proceed to cover the burden. And toward the (people) it shall bring absolution for the accrued violations. And for a seal that shall come in the future and therefore it shall bring, and is for, the anointing of the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle.
v25 And continue to know and proceed to inform; a come forth is decreed, derived of the elders and family lines of Jerusalem unto the high priest. Therefore this shall come first, seventy (CE), seven (months of warfare) and seventy (thousand men).
Sixty and (two) years, they shall proceed to return and therefore to plan to rebuild street(s) and to withdraw being to position. And amid distress, the times shall pass.
v 26 And after the seventy (CE) happens, sixty and (two) years (132 CE) the high priest will be restrained and he shall prepare for his and the city and the place of reverence, (temple mount), so to collapse for a great length of time.
A people shall be led, they shall go into and shall be reaching (Jerusalem), amid to spill out and unto to reach war, therefore to specifically locate those to die.
v27 And the sovereign (Hadrian), ongoing toward many shall invade to unify. And the invaders arrows shall slaughter complete family lineages. And that which goes before (the romans) as a standard; wings (the Roman Aquila). Detestable is that name of those (being slaughtered) and unto (them) an end. And therefore it is ordered to perpetuate your (people), this be upon those names.
The Bar Kokhba revolt foretold in the verse above, resulted in an extensive depopulation of Judean Jewish communities, more so than the Great Revolt of Judea of 70 AD. 580,000 Jews killed, 50 fortified towns and 985 villages razed. The Romans did not fare much better.
Roman emperor Hadrian then prohibited the Torah law and the Hebrew calendar, and executed Judaic scholars. The sacred scroll was ceremonially burned on the Temple Mount.
At the former Temple sanctuary, he installed two statues, one of Jupiter, another of himself. In an attempt to erase any memory of Judea or Ancient Israel, he wiped the name off the map and replaced it with Syria Palaestina.
From this point on, the Jewish people were slowly scattered over the earth as the Romans barred Jews from Jerusalem, except for attendance in Tisha B’Av.
Christopher Tyreman, the head of the Project, is looking forward to the reaction from the theological and historical communities regarding this material.
“These finding could have a major impact on how we approach the Hebrew sacred texts. For years, many of the experts in the field have relegated them to the ranks of mythology. Here, we are now presented with proof that the prophecies restored in Daniel occurred well after the text was known to exist. With this in hand, we have to take a hard look at the origin of these ancient texts and their potential value to us as a people”.
It is interesting to note, that if the project has unraveled the book of Daniel’s prophecies accurately, then another prophecy has been fulfilled in our time.
That the words of the Decrees given to Daniel, were indeed sealed up until our time.
The other Old Testament material restored by the Chronicle Project since 2009 is available free on their website.
